Throw squad highlights success for women at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Augustana Vikings women's track & field team competed at the two-day Southern Miss Invitational over the weekend, squaring off against competition ranging across all divisions.

Heather Michalski highlighted a successful day for the throws, ending as the top collegiate finisher in the javelin after posting a distance of 42.90m. At the time, the mark was good for first in all of Division III and currently sits at No. 2 in the nation. It also ranks second all-time in Augustana program history. Additionally, Michalski came in seventh in the shot put and eighth in the discus. Also in the javelin, Laina Nelson posted a mark of 39.59m to finish in fourth. The distance is good for fifth in the Augie record books. Amelia Miller earned ninth in the event as well, while Nelson earned 11th in the discus.

On the track, the 4x400 relay team of Lauren Oelke, Cora Deemer, McKenzie Reser, and Jordyn Van Santen secured seventh with a time of 4:08.16. Deemer ran a 58.3 split, good for a personal best, and also had top 25 finishes in the 100m and 200m over the weekend. Oelke grabbed a top 10 standing in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:10.89. Sara Marrs was 16th in the 100m hurdles, while Shakira Wade finished 17th in the long jump.

The Vikings will be back next weekend to host the Viking Olympics.
