ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team competed against the Simpson Storm in the consolation game of the Hyatt Place Tournament on Saturday outscoring the Storm 74-64.
The Vikings started the game off strong offensively, putting up 19 points in the first quarter behind six points apiece from
Emma Berg and
Kylee DeVore. Augie attempted more shots than the Storm with 15, while Simpson had 12. The Vikings also had a balanced effort on the glass, snatching five defensive and five offensive rebounds in the quarter.
Heading into the second, both teams battled back and forth with fouls allowing Simpson to close the score gap. The Storm held onto a slight 33-30 advantage at the half.
Returning from the locker room, the Vikings remained within striking distance of the Storm, eventually regaining the lead six minutes in. Trailing 43-41, Augie rattled off 10 points in a row, seeing field goals from four different players. The team posted a 22-13 advantage in the period to go out in front by a score of 52-46 entering the fourth.
Augie maintained their momentum in the final stretch of the game, adding onto their differential with a 23-point fourth quarter, their highest of the game. The Storm got within five with just under nine minutes to go, but the Vikings fended off their opponent down the stretch, doubling up Simpson 16-8 over the course of the next five minutes to pull away for good.
Berg led the Vikings with 16 points, three rebounds, and one steal during her 31 minutes of play.
Macy Beinborn was close behind with 15 points, while also contributing two rebounds, three steals, and one block in her 35 minute duration.
Paige Melton added 10 points off the bench in her first action with the Vikings.
The Vikings will be back in action on November 14 in Monmouth, Ill. for a non-conference battle against the Monmouth Fighting Scots.
