Viking win sets up showdown with Wheaton

Elmhurst Wednesday, winning 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles.

MOLINE, Ill. – Augustana defeated Elmhurst 9-0 at the Quad City Tennis Club Wednesday afternoon, setting up a showdown with perennial rival Wheaton on Saturday, October 13. Coach Jon Miedema's squad improved to 8-0 on the season and 7-0 in the CCIW, while the Bluejays dropped to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the league.
 
Miedema's second doubles team of sophomore Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) made short work of Pamela Kobeszko and Dacey Maglaque, winning 8-1. Seniors Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) whitewashed Chiara Gaudio and Ysabel Gonzaga 8-0 at number one and at third doubles, sophomores Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvider, Ill.) and Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) bested Maddy Freeman and Sarah Paist by a score of 8-2.
 
In singles action, sophomore Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bridget Lopez at number five. Schaffer was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Gaudio at number one and Badawi defeated Gonzaga by the same score at third singles.
 
Reigning CCIW Player of the Week Lombardi defeated Lindsey McCauliffe love and love at fourth singles and Timm won 6-1, 6-2 over Rachel Rettger at number two. Kalli Majewski (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Maglaque at number six.
 
On Saturday, the Vikings welcome Wheaton (9-0) to the Lower Campus Courts. Thunder have dropped just six individual matches in rolling to a 7-0 league record, while Augustana has suffered just three individual losses on its way to a perfect conference mark. Miedema's Vikings will be looking for their 16th consecutive CCIW regular season victory.
